"The Cat and Fiddle chain got its start quite unexpectedly. Reynolds, Tom Evans and Joseph Mehaffey were attending a baseball game in 1948. The game wasn’t too interesting, and the trio began to talk shop. Evans and Mehaffey had been in the wholesale grocery business for about a year while Reynolds has been with the Kroger chain for 13 years, despite his youth. As talk progressed, the idea developed of a retail store related to directly to the wholesale organization. By the time the ninth ending of the game rolled around, plans had shaped up for a new corporation with Reynolds as a head and general manager of the retail store. The location was found soon after the baseball game was over. The first Cat & Fiddle was in operation. The rest is well known history to Danville residents with one success following another."-Danville Register & Bee April 12th 1961.
